Micro Jigging is a relatively new lure fishing technique to Australia which has really taken off over the last 12 months. It is a style of fishing which can be extremely effective if anglers get the technique and tackle correct. Good quality and affordable tackle has become wildly available and the investment isn't too great for the angler who maybe unsure whether this is a style of fishing that may suit them. Why use a Micro Jig over another lure These lures can entice a bite from fish when others do not. As they drop through the water column the lure will provide a strong erratic action. Being a fairly heavy thin lure they can get to the bottom in deeper, fast moving water much faster than other styles of lures making them easier to get to the fish and to keep them in the strike zone for longer. What size jig for what depth As a general rule using jigs up to 30grams are for depths of 5- 10m.In depths above 10m jig weights can vary depending on current. How do I use a Micro Jig Being mindful of the fish you targeting is important as keeping the lure where the fish are likely to be and working the jig in a manner that is appropriate to the species. Eg: Species like Kingfish will often hold off the bottom and respond to a lure worked quiet fast, while fish like Jewfish can hold close to the bottom and more likely take a lure worked slowly. What Rod to use Using a specific rod can improve the action of the lure and make jigging physically easier on the angler. The key is to have a rod that are specifically designed with much slower tapers than more commonly used faster tapered rods which are used for soft plastics. Like all fishing having all the key factors set up correctly can greatly increase chances of success. Do not be daunted by something you are not familiar with and learning as you go is a reality and an enjoyment of any fishing style.
